JAFF X Lab Laba Laba – On Restoration
Marking its 10th anniversary, Lab Laba Laba spotlights three restored works, once neglected or unfinished, along with a visual artifact that captures the spirit of late 1970s film students. Filmed in 16mm and Super 8 with Jakarta Institute of the Arts’ Film Department equipment, these works were produced in an academic setting.
The restoration of these student films aims to expand the conversation around film restoration practices in Indonesia, which are often shaped by commercial interests or cultural policy.
Lab Laba Laba is exhibiting three works:
- Dajang Soembi: Perempoean Jang Dikawini Andjing (2004) by Edwin
- Cerita Tentang Eyang Putri Seno Sastroamidjojo (1978) by Marseli Soemarno
- Waiting (1978) by Seno Gumira Ajidarma

His work and curatorial programmes have been presented at Image Forum Tokyo, Berlinale Forum, EMAF Osnabrück, Jakarta Biennale, TOKAS, and the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. His latest multi-channel film installation, Operation Thunder Tooth, is one of the commissioned works by the Singapore Biennale 2025. In addition to his studio practice, Lazuardi initiated the Palapa Screening Program, a microcinema platform showcasing various left-field films in Bandung, Indonesia.
