(JAFF X JOGJA FESTIVALS) Workshop Penelitian Festival

Over the past three decades, festivals have evolved into a significant phenomenon in both business and cultural studies. They have created transnational spaces where audiences, curators/programmers, and members of the cultural and creative industries interact within social, political, and economic contexts.
There are several theoretical approaches to understanding festivals. The classical approach views festivals as cultural rituals and expressions of community identity, emphasizing symbolic meaning and social cohesion. The instrumentalist approach sees festivals as drivers of the creative economy, tourism, and city branding. Meanwhile, the management approach highlights festivals as professional cultural industries shaped by strategies of curation, marketing, and sustainability.
While festivals have become integral to the global cultural ecosystem, academic research on this subject in Indonesia remains limited. This workshop aims to explore these theoretical frameworks while developing research designs that are contextually relevant to the Indonesian setting.
