Consent as Craft: Redefining Professional Practice in Intimate Scenes
The film industry has transformed with a focus on the safety and personal boundaries of actors when performing intimate scenes, following issues of discomfort and harassment. A key role has emerged: the Intimacy Coordinator (IC). They ensure that every intimate scene—from kissing to emotional vulnerability—is performed consensually, safely, and professionally, mediating communication between the director and actors. The presence of an IC is crucial to ensuring actors feel safe in the workplace and supporting ethical representations of intimacy, which is particularly relevant in Asia given local cultural norms.
