JAFF20 “TRANSFIGURATION”: Unveiling JAFF20 Official Artwork by Artists Muklay & Wulang Sunu

This year, Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF) celebrates its 20th edition by embracing the theme “TRANSFIGURATION” – encapsulates the festival’s two-decade journey of transformation. From its humble beginnings to becoming one of Asia’s most dynamic platforms for cinema. The two decades have been a critical period for reflecting deeply on the length of journey the festival has taken, measured through its achievements as well as the unrealized ideals.

Through a period of waxing and waning like the moon, JAFF has attempted to carve out its identity and position amongst film festivals across Asia and the Pacific. TRANSFIGURATION captures JAFF’s commitment to always invent new innovative programs as it evolves and transfigures anew while deepening its existing programs in search of a better future. Not only maintaining an annual celebration of Asian cinema, but it is also creating an impactful festival for film industries, communities, and their larger ecosystem.

This year’s theme comes to life visually through a special collaboration of two Indonesia’s promising young visual artists Muchlis Fachri ‘Muklay’ and Wulang Sunu. Together, they interpret TRANSFIGURATION into the JAFF20 official artwork, infusing it with vibrant energy, imagination, and a deep sense of movement – just like the spirit of the festival itself.

Muchlis Fachri, better known as Muklay, is a contemporary visual artist based in Jakarta. A graduate of Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), Muklay’s signature pop-surrealist style blends bright colors, bold black outlines, and eccentric humor. Deeply inspired by pop culture and urban life, his works reflect the vibrancy and playful chaos of today’s world.

Wulang Sunu is a multidisciplinary visual artist and a graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta. Working across drawing, painting, animation and installation, his works explore human experience, history and mythology: balancing joy, melancholy, and humor. Previously part of Papermoon Puppet Theatre, Wulang is now an active member of Studio Batu Collective. His works have been exhibited in Australia, the Netherlands, Malaysia and Singapore.
