Talks: Dare to be A Webtoonist! by Kwikku
Although it emerged in Indonesia in 2010 through Ngomik.com which once had 2,700 users and 500 comic artists, webtoons (digital comics) in Indonesia are not yet very popular. It is only since 2015 when LINE Webtoon was launched that the potential for creators and the Webtoon market in Indonesia has been increasingly visible. Currently, Line Webtoon has reached 6 million readers, of which Indonesia is the largest market for digital comics. Several Indonesian digital comics have been successful and made into films, namely “Si Juki: Lika-Liku Anak Kos” (2017), “Terlalu Tampan” (2019), and “Eggnoid” (2019). In fact, one Indonesian webtoon, “Virgo and The Sparkling” will soon be adapted into a Korean drama series.
Founded in 2013, and attracting 40,000 registered users at its launch, Kwikku has become one of the leading Indonesian Gen Z social storytelling platforms today. Since joining the Falcon Pictures ecosystem in 2019, countless stories, webtoons, and even film scripts published on Kwikku have become successful, published as novels, comics, and films. This discussion is being held to find out the ins and outs of webtoons in Indonesia, and how to become a successful webtoonist.

Sweta Kartika
Being a comic artist and an illustrator has been Sweta Kartika's aspiration since he was merely a child. Born on 14 April 1986 to an artist father in a small town in Kebumen, Central Java, his childhood plays a crucial role in cultivating imagination and discipline to sharpen his drawing skills from day to day. Subconsciously, it then brought forth a motto in the life of this enthusiast of Indonesian traditional visual arts that "there is no such thing as an instant success".
Having attended formal education for 12 years, Sweta pursued his study under Visual Communication Design Program at Bandung Institute of Technology. It was during this time when he began to deepen visual studies of traditional arts and collaborated with three other friends that share the same vision to set up Wanara Studio, where he manages the comic and illustration division. Upon completing his Bachelor degree in 2008, he went on as a comic artist and illustrator freelance while attending the Master Program of Design at the very same alma mater in 2011 and graduated two years later, prior to the publications of his action comics Nusantaranger and Wanara.
Currently, Sweta is actively advocating Indonesian creative industry as a comic artist and a non• academic educator as well, sharing techniques and procedures of creating a lively story through his self-composed Comic Sense course. Sweta is also compassionate of presenting Pencak Silat through action comics to the global market. Having been told many during his childhood, Sweta grew fond of silat warrior saga and decided to establish Padepokan Ragasukma along with his best friend, Alex Irzaqi, as a means to gather the other silat comic artists.
His masterpiece, Pusaka Dewa, which published under Padepokan Ragasukma depicts a rotten conten• tion of sacred traditional Javanese weapon. It has successfully emerged as the reformer of Indonesian silat comics and has been eventually adapted into a card game entitled Keris Tanding. In conjunction with other ten silat comic artists, Sweta aims to promote Indonesian traditions and culture to the inter• national comic industry.

Talks: Ask the Cinematographers with Indonesian Cinematographers Society
A film’s visuals can encapsulate various meanings to be conveyed from the story. During this discussion, the Indonesia Cinematographers Society will share stories about the creative process of Directors of Photography, how to create and execute visual concepts in several Indonesian cinema films to award-winning films at international film festivals.
LPP 1 | FRI, 2 DEC | 13:00 - 15:00

The Indonesian Cinematographers Society (ICS) was inaugurated on January 7, 2014. It is a professional association of cinematographers in the Indonesian film ecosystem. The association was formerly known as Cinematographer Indonesia (SI), but in 2017, it was decided the name would be changed to Indonesian Cinematographers Society (ICS).
This organization is expected to 1) advance moving images in science, art, and technology, 2) protect and maintain professionalism in the cinematography department; and 3) preserve the artistic and technological excellence of the Indonesian film ecosystem. The motto of the organization is “Commitment, Progress, Skill”
The formation of ICS has long been the dream of previous Indonesian cinematographers, such as Soetomo Gandasoebrata, George Kamarullah, M. Soleh Ruslani, and Sri Atmo. On January 7, 2014, the creation of what they sought became official. The General Meeting of Members of Indonesian Cinematographers (RUA-SI) was held at the Haji Usmar Ismail Film Building and was attended by over seventy members and forty guests. Through this meeting, an executive committee of seven were elected for the 2014-2017 management period: Agni Ariatama, I.C.S, Arief R Pribadi, I.C.S, Arya Tedja, Gunnar Nimpuno, I.C.S, Roy Lolang, I.C.S, Sidi Saleh, and Yudi Datau, I.C.S.
During the management of SI/ICS from 2014 to 2017, several programs, including Wedangan and Seminar, were operated. Wedangan was a monthly film screening program, enriched by conversations with cinematographers from related films. “The Killers” (featuring Gunnar Nimpuno), “GIE” (featuring Yudi Datau), “Laura dan Marsha” (featuring Roy Lolang), and “Dilema” (featuring Yudi Datau) were among them. In addition, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the association ‘SATU TAHUN SINEMATOGRAFER INDONESIA,’ a series of events were held at the Gedung Film MT Haryono; specifically, seminars “Batas memberi bentuk pada apa yang tidak terbatas” by Arief R. Pribadi and “Memotret Wajah Tuhan” by Nur Hidayat. In addition, there was a presentation for members regarding the SKKNI.
Entering the 2019 to 2022 management period, the Indonesian Cinematographer Society has retained several active members from the previous administration. In the management of this period, ICS has already established a Secretariat on Jl. Damai in Ciganjur, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta. Some new educational programs include Frame by Frame, Kelas Sinematografi, Seminar Titik Nol, Sunset Discussion, and Bicara Sinematografi. Then there are the policy programs, such as the FGD Jam Kerja in collaboration with SINDIKASI and the social program ICS Peduli 2020. In addition, ICS actively sends jury representatives to the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI). Finally, ICS is implementing a system for accrediting degrees.
Membership in the Indonesian Cinematographers Society is by invitation, based on the ICS Degree Accreditation Mechanism Guidebook, which is separated into practitioner and academic pathways. Aside from that, ICS continues to educate and discuss cinematography with anyone interested in cinematography.

Public Lecture: Reflecting Asian Cinema: Recognition or Visibility?

Public Lecture: Reflecting Asian Cinema: Recognition or Visibility?
This year, Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF) inaugurates its 17th edition since its humble beginnings in 2006. In the context of development psychology, the seventeenth year commonly signifies crucial physiological and psychological human development. It is closely associated with the peak of adolescence and youth, brimming with energy, curiosity and creativity. The openness that accompanies this age underscores other traits, among which is the unwavering courage to rebel against conventions or established norms.
Therefore, taking inspiration from human development, JAFF presents ‘Blossom’ as the festival theme to mark its coming of age. Moreover, ‘Blossom’ symbolizes renewal during the seemingly unending pandemic in terms of mode of film production, artistic and thematic explorations and the emerging of new talents in Asian film landscape. In particular, ‘Blossom’ offers new hopes and dreams for Asian cinema in an era marked by the high risk, volatility and uncertainties in many aspects of our lives. In the process of maturing into a full blossom, the future is bursting with possibilities.
Moving beyond global recognition and gaining many accolades, Asian cinema has entered into a new stage characterized by new narratives, themes and styles. This is created by a new generation of Asian filmmakers who have sustained their excellent cinematic achievements while bringing many pressing social and political issues into the spotlight. Through the metaphor of “blossoming”, we are able to identify the refreshing and continuously inventive Asian cinema.

Messages from Program Director
Message from Program Director
Last year’s edition of Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF) was a new chapter for the festival.
Held during the anxiety of the pandemic, JAFF returned to being an in-person meeting space after previously being forced to meet only online. Longing and enthusiasm were present in the air. Many people following strict health protocols, came one after another. The face-to-face meetings which had become an annual ritual were finally happening again. So how to maintain or even add to the splendour of a festival that was already big last year, to bring to life the 17th edition in 2022?
17 is an age that is often considered an important marker in Indonesia. At this age, people take birthday celebrations seriously. A festive party signifies that someone has arrived at the end of their adolescence and is entering adulthood. Those who are 17 years old are those who begin to take responsibility by becoming more mature in thinking and decision making. For JAFF, the 17th edition is more than just a celebration.
The 17th edition will reflect, strengthen, and affirm the identity of JAFF so that it becomes a warm and resilient festival nurturing the growth of creativity and openness for all film lovers.
There was a drastic jump in the number of registrants this year compared to the previous year, increasing more than 700 percent to more than 3000. The program team have then selected the films leading up to today: the days of the festival where you can see the results.
Across several meetings, we took turns choosing films encompassing a variety of stories. As you may know, the program team are separated by distance and even time across cities and continents.
From the start, we have always been open to ideas for the latest festival. A pleasant fluidity and wildness.
Like last year’s edition, the main competition program still combines two types of awards: Hanoman and NETPAC. It was no coincidence that last year both were won by the same film. There are 13 films this year competing from 10 countries, 7 of which being feature debuts for their directors. The Light of Asia short film competition (9 films from 6 countries) and the Indonesia Screen Awards, devoted to Indonesian films, are back again. This year also marks the return of an award that has been absent, namely the Geber Award, chosen by a jury of film community representatives and the Student Award.
In the Asian Perspectives program, we present 24 films from 10 countries. We are also introducing two new programs, Panorama and Emerging. Panorama is an Indonesian screening program for films which are circulating around the international film festival circuit.
Panorama aims to see the world through film festivals, look into Asian films, both their stories and events, as well as invite JAFF audiences to become part of the world cinema of the year by watching these films. Emerging is a special program for filmmakers that we feel have the potential to be given opportunities, to be introduced and follow their development over the next few years.
In addition, there will are programs for “special” audiences such as Films for Children and Whispering Cinema. We have also given gigs to several Indonesian feature films and films from Jogja Film Academy students. In the Community Forum, we are specifically screening short films directed by women from various cities throughout Indonesia. This is very important considering that the number of female directors is still minimal, which has an impact on the diversity of perspectives and ways of speaking. In addition, we have also created a special program entitled Soccer for All which will invite the audience to understand the ins and outs of Indonesian football from the perspective of the fans. This program was created to continue to call for the reform of the Indonesian football system after the many casualties in the Kanjuruhan Stadium incident.
The Classic program will show a film by Indonesian female director, Ratna Asmara entitled Dr. Samsi. According to records, this film was made in 1952, and has been digitized and researched by friends from Liarsip, a group that focuses on archiving and researching the history of women in Indonesian cinema. In addition, two Wong Kar-Wai films: In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express will be screened to provide an opportunity for audiences to watch both films in a cinema environment. These films will be preceded by the film Piknik Pesona, a production from Palari Films directed by 10 directors, some of whom grew and developed in grassroots areas and arenas, including JAFF. The 10 films will be screened altogether on one occasion and again in groups of five films. Who is to guess what the audience’s limit is especially with the increasing prevalence of long film durations in the mainstream industry.
JAFF at the age of 17, with the theme Bloom, strives to maintain the good from its festival program, constantly trying new things, and being relevant to the world cinema culture and Indonesia. Like a flower, we may view it not only from its outer beauty but also from the memory of good things that will develop after a long season of waiting. We will meet in the corners of that good event today to grow together.
