Requiem from Java

Garin Nugroho is a celebrated Indonesian filmmaker, screenwriter, and artist, renowned for blending cinema, poetry, and performance art. Born in Yogyakarta in 1961, he studied film at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts. His debut feature, Love in a Slice of Bread (1991), won the Citra Award for Best Picture at the Indonesian Film Festival. Acclaimed works such as Leaf on a Pillow, Opera Jawa, and Memories of My Body have earned him international recognition. Garin’s films often explore themes of identity, culture, and spirituality through a distinctly poetic visual style. Beyond film, he has created cross-disciplinary works including Satan Jawa and Planet – A Lament, solidifying his reputation as Indonesia’s “poet of cinema.”
