Beyond Outsourcing: Towards the Future of Indonesian Animation in the Asian Creative Landscape

Recent Indonesian animated films are no longer targeting only the children’s market with simple visual quality. Jumbo became the highest-grossing film, attracting 10 million viewers. At the same time, local animation studios have started to invest more time and resources to produce 3D animations with visuals that meet global standards. However, the animation cinema ecosystem is still not fully supported by a consistent audience or government regulations that accommodate the needs of animators. This situation has sparked widespread discussions both on social media and within film circles about the importance of quality and creative processes in animation production. This discussion will explore the experiences of animators in their journey to secure a rightful place for animated films within Indonesia’s film ecosystem.
