Garin Nugroho
Garin Nugroho is an influential film director, screenwriter and producer whose work has shaped modern Indonesian cinema.
After studying film at the Jakarta Institute of Arts and law at the University of Indonesia, he made his feature debut with Cinta dalam Sepotong Roti (1991), winning the Best Film award at the Indonesian Film Festival.
His films often blend Javanese culture, political themes and aesthetic experimentation — for example Opera Jawa (2006) Daun di Atas Bantal (1998) and The Hijra (2015) — and he is recognised internationally.
Through both his prolific output and his creative leadership, Garin Nugroho remains a key voice in the evolution of Indonesian art and cinema.
