Torosiaje: The Bajou, The Sea, and The Future

Iqnal Rayyan Lamahuseng is an academic currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Graduate School of the Jakarta Institute of the Arts. His work focuses on the production of the documentary film "Torosiaje: The Bajou, The Sea, and The Future". The film explores the social and cultural impacts of urbanization on the Torosiaje Bajau Tribe, particularly how traditional fishing methods have begun to be replaced by destructive practices such as the use of illegal fish bombs. His work aims to highlight the intergenerational conflicts within the Bajau community regarding the preservation of their traditions. The issues faced by the Torosiaje Bajau community include the shift from traditional, eco-friendly fishing practices to modern technologies and other methods that harm the marine ecosystem and leave lasting impacts on the culture of the Torosiaje Bajau people. The current cultural changes have affected the lifestyle of the Torosiaje Bajau community, especially in the shifting values of customs, traditions, and culture—most notably among the younger generation—in their efforts to preserve and sustain the seafaring traditions passed down by their ancestors to protect the marine ecosystem.
