Public Lecture: “Where Is My Audience?: Understanding the Stagnation of Film Distribution”
Film distribution and exhibition across commercial venues (cinemas) and non-commercial spaces (alternative screens) continue to face disparities and tend to remain stagnant. Limited public understanding of the business mechanisms behind film exhibition often raises questions, including what indicators are used to determine the number of screens allocated to a film and its screening schedule. Discussions surrounding audiences attending films outside their intended classifications, as well as frequently changing cinema regulations, also regularly emerge on social media. The rise of OTT platforms has, to some extent, changed cinema-going behavior. This discussion program is designed to focus on the business processes of theatrical film distribution, screen allocation, and film audience behavior.
