Hanoman Awards
Hanoman Awards is a feature-length competitive program for established directors and upcoming young talent who hold the future of Asian cinema. The first winner will be awarded a Golden Hanoman and runner-up will be awarded a Silver Hanoman.
NETPAC Award
NETPAC Award aims to read the diverse Asian perspectives from the first or second work of directors who hold the future of Asian cinema.
Blencong Award
This is an in-competition program for Asian short films that will be eligible to compete for Blencong Awards for the best Asian shorts.
Indonesian Screen Awards
This is a feature-length competitive program of the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival for established filmmakers and upcoming young talent who hold the future of Indonesian cinema. This section will have 6 awards; Best Film, Best Director, Best Storytelling, Best Cinematography, Best Performance and Best Editing
GEBER Award
GEBER AWARD is given to the best Asian film from the first or second work of directors who hold the future of Asian cinema, chosen by the representatives of film communities around Indonesia. This award is a form of a statement by the Indonesian film community to show their perspectives regarding marginalized and/or controversial issues.
Student Award
STUDENT AWARD is given to the best Asian shorts in the Light of Asia program. The winner is chosen by the representatives of film students in Yogyakarta.
19th JAFF Honorary AWARDS
Aruna Vasudev
Referred to as the Godmother of Asian Cinema, filmmaker, festival director academic and journalist, Dr. Aruna Vasudev (1936-2024) is best known for establishing NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema), an independent non-profit with the special aim of bringing Asian-Pacific cinema to a wider audience in 1991. Her visionary outlook on bringing Asian cinema to the global stage has profoundly shaped the way the larger public value Asian cinema worldwide. This is reflected in her numerous pioneering efforts to establish the first quarterly on Asian cinema, Cimemaya, as well as founding Cinefan: Festival of Asian Cinema in 1999 and founding the Indian chapter of FIPRESCI with Chidananda Dasgupta in 1992. In addition to her involvement in film festivals, she has also published several notable books, articles and essays on cinema as an author/editor/co-editor, among them: Liberty and License in the Indian Cinema (1978), Indian Cinema Superbazaar (1983), Les cinemas indiens (1984), Frames of Mind: Reflections on Indian Cinema (1996), Being and Becoming: The Cinemas of Asia (2002), Modernity & Nationality in Vietnamese Cinema (2007) and Kenji Mizoguchi and the Art of Japanese Cinema (2008). The 19th JAFF Honorary Awards is thus posthumously awarded to recognize her immense contribution to Asian cinema, making JAFF possible.
Hendrick Gozali
An iconic figure in Indonesian cinema, Hendrick Gozali (1939-2024) is known for his significant contributions in Indonesian film production, producing approximately 40 film titles since 1970, most notably being: Boni dan Nancy (1974), Ranjang Pengantin (1974), Ranjang Siang Ranjang Malam (1976), Buah Terlarang (1979), Perempuan dalam Pasungan (1980) and Tirai Malam Pengantin (1983). Aside from his role as a film producer, he has worked in various roles within the film industry as an assistant film director and the director for the film distribution and production company, PT. Garuda Film, was influential in importing Hong Kong films into the Indonesian shore before producing Indonesian cult classics. This year’s JAFF Honorary Awards is thus posthumously awarded to him for his contribution to developing the burgeoning Indonesian film industry.
Kim Dong-Ho
As the founder and former director of one of Asia’s premier film festival, Busan International Film Festival, Kim Dong-Ho remains one of the most celebrated and loved figure in Asian cinema. His cinematic contributions are immense and varied, from his appointment as the Korean Motion Picture Promotion Corporation (now Korean Film Council) president in 1988 and establishing the reputable Graduate School of Cinematic Contents at Dankook. His crucial cultural contribution has been recognized internationally –– having been bestowed the Knight of the Legion of Honor in France, the prestigious UNESCO Fellini Medal (2007) and the Republic of Korea’s National Order of Culture, Silver Crown Award. In addition, he made his directorial debut with the short film Jury (2012) for the 10th anniversary of Asiana International Short Film Festival and has since continued to play crucial roles in film production as executive film producers for several critically-acclaimed feature films, most notably: 10 Minutes (2014), End of Winter (2016) and Seeds of Violence (2017). The 19th JAFF Honorary Award is thus awarded for his continued and crucial contribution to Asian cinema.
