Perspective Cinematography Working Overseas

Cinematography in Asian cinema is experiencing a dynamic period of growth and transformation, marked by the increasing involvement of overseas cinematographers. As the film industries in Asia continue to expand and attract international attention, cross-border collaborations are becoming more common, bringing together a wide range of artistic sensibilities and technical expertise. As the demand for visually compelling and internationally marketable films grows, overseas cinematographers will continue to play a vital role in shaping the visual storytelling of Asian cinema. The blending of local narratives with global perspectives in cinematography is expected to drive the evolution of the industry, pushing boundaries and creating films that resonate with audiences worldwide

Dimas Bagus began his career with the short film Wan An, which won the Best Short Film award at FFI 2013. He has also created several series, including Sore Istri Dari Masa Depan (2016), Saiyo Sakato (2019), and Yang Hilang Dalam Cinta (2021).
To date, Dimas has completed three feature films: Jatuh Cinta Seperti di Film-Film (2023), Sampai Jumpa Selamat Tinggal (2023), and 1 Kakak 7 Ponakan (2024). He is currently filming his fourth feature, though the title is still under wraps.
Dimas believes that story, direction, and cinematography must be interconnected, each element enhancing and reinforcing the others.

Gunnar Nimpuno is one of the most outstanding directors of photography (DoP) in contemporary Indonesian cinema, known for his range from a realist documentary approach to highly stylized genre films. His work is marked by a signature style that is both raw and beautiful.
Gunnar’s extensive experience began in advertising, drawing from his background in visual communication. He started his career as an assistant cameraman for numerous veteran DoPs in commercial films, which helped shape his unique perspective and technical skills.
He has since gone on to shoot some of Indonesia’s most high-profile films, including The Dreamers (2009), Modus Anomali (2012), Atambua 39ºC (2012), The Killers (2014), and the highly anticipated martial arts film The Golden Cane Warrior, released in December 2014 and showcased at Sea Screen Makassar 2014. He also worked on The Night Comes For Us (2018), further solidifying his reputation as a leading DoP in Indonesian cinema.

A self-taught filmmaker and Asian Film Academy alumnus. His debut film, 'On the Origin of Fear’, premiered at Venice International Film Festival 2016 and won the Blue Angel for Best Short Film Award at the Art Film Fest Kosice, Slovak 2017. His latest film, ‘Vania on Lima Street’, won Best Short Film Award from Singapore International Film Festival 2022. and got Special Mention Award at Hiroshima International Film Festival 2023. Currently developing his debut feature film project, as well as teaches film class at the Multimedia Nusantara University, Tangerang, Indonesia
