Diskusi Buku Festival

In recent decades, the number of film festivals in Asia and around the world has increased tremendously. These film festivals not only provide opportunities to appreciate cinematic works, but they also have an impact on numerous sectors of the film industry, such as distribution, marketing, and production trends. With increased interest and participation from both local and foreign filmmakers, it is critical to analyze how the growth of these film festivals affects the film business on both the Asian and worldwide levels. This discussion will focus on the books “Managing Film Festivals” by Ifa Isfansyah and “Film Festivals in Indonesia” by Lulu Ratna.

Ifa Isfansyah

Ifa ISFANSYAH graduated from the Television Department of Indonesian Institute of Art Jogjakarta. He began his career in cinema as Producer and Director of several short films, including HARAP TENANG, ADA UJIAN! (2006) and SETENGAH SENDOK TEH (2008). In 2001, he started his company Fourcolours Films with other local filmmakers in order to produce and support Indonesian filmmakers. He was selected by the Asian Film Academy BUSAN in 2006 and got a scholarship to attend the Im Kwon Taek College of Film & Performing Arts, KOREA. Then back to Indonesia, he directed his first feature film, GARUDA DI DADAKU (2009), which encountered a great commercial success. His second film, SANG PENARI (2011) was awarded Best Director and Best Picture at the Indonesian Film Festival. Since as producer, he has produced SITI (2015), TURAH (2018), THE SEEN AND UNSEEN (2017), KUCUMBU TUBUH INDAHKU (2018), YUNI (2021) and Before, Now & Then (2022). ISFANSYAH is also co-founder of JOGJA-NETPAC Asian Film Festival that started in 2006 and a founder of the JOGJA FILM ACADEMY, which was established in 2014.

Lulu Ratna

Lulu Ratna was born and lives in Jakarta. She has been working in several film festivals since 1999, as organiser, film programmer, selection committee and jury, besides being invited as panelist and observer. She co-founded 3 organizations: Boemboe Organization (https://boemboe.org) , Coordination for Film Festival in Indonesia (https://coffie.id) and Indonesian Film Programmer Forum. Now she teaches at the Film Program in Universitas Multimedia Nusantara and the Organizing Committee of UCIFEST - UMN Animation & Film Festival. She is one of the Program Advisors of International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and recently released a book about film festival practices in Indonesia “Berfestival Film di Indonesia” (2024).

Dyna Herlina

Dyna Herlina Suwarto, PhD is a Lecturer in Communication Science at Yogyakarta State University. She is an alumnus of the University of Nottingham, UK. Besides teaching on campus, she also facilitates various film activities such as academic script writing, policy research, workshop facilitator, jury, curator, and film archive consultant. She wrote several books including ‘Crisis and Paradox of Indonesian Film’ (2013), ‘Mapping Yogyakarta Filmmakers’ (2015), ‘Watching the Audience: Cinema Film Audiences in Three Cities’ (2019). Her scientific articles in the field of media studies are published in various reputable international and national journals. She is also the co-founder of Jogja Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF) and Indonesian Film Studies (KAFEIN). She can be contacted via email
