An iconic figure in Indonesian cinema, Hendrick Gozali (1939-2024) is known for his significant contributions in Indonesian film production. Since 1970, Hendrick Gozali has produced approximately 40 films. Aside from his role as a film producer, he has worked in various roles within the film industry as an assistant film director and the director for the film distribution and production company, PT. Garuda Film, an influential company in importing Hong Kong films into the Indonesian shore before producing Indonesian cult classics.

The Tribute to Hendrick Gozali program features three popular films produced by him: Ranjang Pengantin (1974), Perempuan dalam Pasungan (1980), and Sama Juga Bohong (1986).

  1. Perempuan dalam Pasungan (1980)

Perempuan dalam Pasungan is the first film to depict the ancient Javanese tradition of confining those considered mentally disturbed, even when they are family members. The film won four Citra Awards at the 1981 Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) for Best Feature Film, Best Direction (Ismail Soebardjo), Best Cinematography (Tantra Surjadi), and Best Art Direction (Benny Benhardi).

  2. Ranjang Pengantin (1974)

Ranjang Pengantin is a film directed by the maestro Teguh Karya and brought recognition to actors Slamet Rahardjo and Lenny Marlina. The film, which highlights the phenomenon of a young couple marrying without parental consent, won five Citra Awards at the 1975 FFI, including Best Direction (Teguh Karya).

  3. Sama Juga Bohong (1986)

Sama Juga Bohong is the 34th feature film produced by PT. Garuda Film and is the first collaboration between Hendrick Gozali and the famous comedy group Warkop DKI. The film tells the story of the trio Dono, Kasino, and Indro, who attempt to organize a charity event to repair the home of a friend and an orphanage that is on the brink of collapse. The film became the third highest-grossing film in Jakarta at the time, gaining 363,459 viewers.

Hendrick Gozali’s legacy continues to thrive. Today, his two children, producer Linda Gozali and director Charles Gozali, are still active in filmmaking, with works such as Pemukiman Setan (2023) and Qodrat (2022). Both are currently working on the sequel to Qodrat, titled Qodrat 2, which is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2025.
