ENGLISH The young daughter of a veteran poet, Chandrabati is in love with another poet Jayananda. On the eve of their marriage, Jayananda betrays Chandrabati and marries another woman in the community. The pain struck Chandrabati resorts to choosing a passionate life of confining herself inside a Shiva Temple and vowing to rewrite the epic Ramayana. She tries to recall her early writings and decides to transform Sita – the ignored female of the epic – into the main hero. Jayanada realizes his grave mistake and returns to the temple seeking forgiveness from Chandrabati. She refuses to listen to him and concentrates on completing her mission of rewriting the epic into a ballad of her own conscious. The rejected Jayananda commits suicide by drowning in the nearby river. The pain stricken Chandrabati gets very sick after this incident but still struggles to remain obdurate of completing her journey. Set in the mid-sixteenth century, classical East Bengal context, Chandrabati Kotha (The Tales of Chandrabati) is a tribute to the pioneering feminist Bengali poet Chandrabati.
