Lisabona Rahman started out as a film critic, writing for newspapers between 2005-2007. She then founded Indonesia’s first dedicated programmed cinema, kineforum Jakarta Arts Council in 2006 and stayed as its main programmer until 2011. Between 2011 and 2013 she joined a specialist training for moving image preservation and curatorial in the Netherlands. Afterwards, for three years she worked as film restoration technician at the L’immagine Ritrovata Laboratory in Italy until 2016. She moved to Jakarta subsequently and started providing consultations for various preservation and restoration projects. This is her first year of contribution to JAFF as programmer of Layar Klasik section.

Lisabona Rahman memulai karir sebagai kritikus film untuk surat kabar pada tahun 2005-2007. Ia kemudian mendirikan program sinema pertama di Indonesia, kineforum Jakarta Arts Council pada tahun 2006 dan menjadi programmer utama hingga 2011. Antara 2011 sampai 2013 Lisabona mengikuti pelatihan spesialisasi untuk pelestarian gambar bergerak dan kuratorial di Belanda. Setelah itu, selama tiga tahun ia bekerja sebagai teknisi restorasi film di laboratorium restorasi L’immagine Ritrovata di Italia hingga 2016. Dia pindah ke Jakarta setelahnya dan mulai memberikan konsultasi untuk berbagai proyek pelestarian dan restorasi. Ini adalah tahun pertamanya berkontribusi untuk JAFF sebagai programmer segmen Layar Klasik.

Joko Anwar, born January 3rd 1976 in Medan, North Sumatera, has been enjoying commercial and critical success as a writer and a director. The first film that he wrote, Arisan! (2003) won numerous awards at home and abroad and was hailed as a groundbreaking movie in Indonesia. His directorial debut, Janji Joni (Joni’s Promise, 2005) was a box office smash comedy and highly praised by international critics. His next film, the genre-bending Kala (2007) was named one of the best films of the year by Sight and Sound magazine who cited him as one of the smartest filmmakers in Asia. His third feature, Pintu Terlarang (The Forbidden Door, 2009) won Top Prize at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and also named one of the best films of 2009 by Sight and Sound magazine. Richard Corliss of TIME wrote that “As slick as it is sick, the movie could be Anwar’s calling card for international employment”. They also mentioned the film as an “example of what movies could be but rarely dare to try”. His next film, Modus Anomali (Ritual) (2012) broke out into international markets and also won praises from critics. His A Copy of My Mind (2015) competed at Venice International Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival in 2015. His first horror feature, Pengabdi Setan (Satan’s Slaves) broke record as the highest grossing Indonesian horror film of all time and was the highest grossing Indonesian film in 2017 and was sold to more than 42 countries and won the most awards in Indonesian equivalent of The Oscars.

Joko Anwar has also directed TV series for HBO Asia, including Folklore: A Mother’s Love (2018).

Joko Anwar also writes for other directors.

He just finished directing an Indonesian superhero movie titled Gundala which slated to be released in July 2019.

Joko Anwar, lahir 3 Januari 1976 di Medan, Sumatera Utara, adalah seorang penulis skenario dan sutradara box office yang sekaligus berhasil mendapatkan pengakuan dari kritikus film dunia. Skenario pertamanya, Arisan! (2003), mendapatkan banyak penghargaan dari dalam maupun luar negeri. Film Arisan! juga disebut-sebut sebagai film gebrakan baru Indonesia.

Film pertama yang dia sutradarai, Janji Joni (2005), ditayangkan di lima puluh festival film internasional di lima benua dan berhasil secara komersil di Indonesia. Filmnya yang kedua, Kala, masuk dalam daftar film-film terbaik dunia tahun 2007 versi majalah Sight and Sound, Inggris. Film ini juga memenangkan banyak penghargaan termasuk di New York dan Berlin.

Pintu Terlarang, film Joko yang ketiga, memenangkan Film Terbaik di festival bergengsi Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival tahun 2009 dan mendapat pujian dari para kritikus dunia termasuk dari majalah TIME.

Filmnya yang keempat, Modus Anomali (2012), mendapatkan world premiere di South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) dan berhasil menembus pasar dunia termasuk di Amerika Serikat, Kanada, Inggris. Di Belanda dan Perancis, film ini diedarkan oleh Paramount Pictures.

A Copy of My Mind (2015), filmnya yang kelima, berkompetisi di Venice Film Festival dan Joko berhasil meraih penghargaan Sutradara Terbaik di Festival Film Indonesia.

 

Filmnya yang keenam, Pengabdi Setan, adalah film terlaris Indonesia tahun 2017 dan film Indonesia horor terlaris sepanjang masa, serta berhasil menembus pasar 42 negara dan menjadi film box office di beberapa di antaranya. Selain itu, Pengabdi Setan juga menjadi film Indonesia dengan nominasi Piala Citra Terbanyak dan berhasil memenangkan 7 Piala Citra. Pengabdi Setan juga berhasil menembus banyak festival internasional bergengsi termasuk Rotterdam Film Festival.

Joko Anwar juga telah membuat film seri untuk HBO berjudul Halfworlds (2015) serta Folklore: A Mother’s Love (2018) yang berhasil masuk seleksi Toronto International Film Festival.

PHILIP CHEAH

Philip Cheah is a film critic and is the editor of BigO, Singapore’s only independent pop culture publication. He is Advisory Council member of Network for the Promotion of Asia-Pacific Cinema (NETPAC), and is currently program consultant for the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival, Hanoi International Film Festival, Jaffna International Film Festival and Shanghai International Film Festival.

He co-founded the South-east Asian Film Festival and the Asia Pacific Screen Lab and is Patron of the SEA (South-east Asia) Screen Academy in Makassar, Indonesia. 

He is co-editor of the books, Garin Nugroho: And the Moon DancesNoel Vera: Critic After Dark and Ngo Phuong Lan: Modernity and Nationality in Vietnamese Cinema.

He was given an award for Achievement in the Promotion of Kyrgyz film by the Kyrgyzstan Film Critics in 2010, an award for promoting Vietnamese film by the Vietnam Cinema Association in 2008, an Award for Asian Cinema at the 8th Cinemanila International Film Festival in 2006, and the Korean Cinema Award at the 9th Busan International Film Festival in 2004.

Philip Cheah adalah seorang kritikus film dan penyunting BigO, satu-satunya media massa independent kebudayaan popular di Singapura. Ia adalah anggota dari Advisory Council di Network for the Promotion of Asia-Pacific Cinema (NETPAC). Sekarang ia menjabat sebagai konsultan program untuk Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival, Hanoi International Film Festival, Jaffna International Film Festival, dan Shanghai International Film Festival.

Phillip membantu mendirikan South-east Asian Film Festival dan Asia Pacific Screen Lab. Ia juga merupakan penganggung jawab dari SEA (South-east Asia) Screen Academy di Makassar, Indonesia.

Ekky Imanjaya is a lecturer in Film Department, BINUS University. His post graduate thesis titled Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema explored cult and B-movies related to global flows and taste. His research interest, specifically in New Film History and Indonesian and Southeast Asian movie studies. His works are available in some scientific journal and popular media, including Jump Cut, Asian Cinema, Colloquy, Rolling Stone Indonesia, Tempo, and Kompas. He is also a film critics and author of some books about cinema, culture, thought, and Islam. He became the judge in Plaridel journal for a special edition of ”The Bad, The Worse, and The Worst: The Significance of Indonesian Cult, Exploitation, and B Movies.” in  2015.

Ekky Imanjaya adalah dosen tetap di jurusan Film, Universitas Bina Nusantara. Dia baru saja lulus sebagai Doktor di bidang Kajian Film dari University of East Anglia. Tesis S3-nya berjudul Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema yang mengeksplorasi bidang cult dan B-movies terkait global flows dan Politik Selera. Minat risetnya, khususnya, pada New Film History dan kajian film Indonesia dan Asia Tenggara. Tulisannya tersebar di jurnal ilmiah dan media popular, termasuk di Jump Cut, Asian Cinema, Colloquy, Rolling Stone Indonesia, Tempo, dan Kompas.  Ia juga kritikus film dan penulis beberapa buku seputar sinema, kebudayaan, pemikiran, dan Islam. Ia menjadi editor tamu di jurnal Plaridel untuk edisi khusus  The Bad, The Worse, and The Worst: The Significance of Indonesian Cult, Exploitation, and B Movies.”, 2015.

Tito Imanda is an anthropologist and a filmmaker. His master thesis from the Department of Media, Culture and Communication in New York University (2007), is about the political economy of the Indonesian film industry. In 2008-2013 he developed and managed a film school at a university in Jakarta. These days he is mostly in Yogyakarta and London, doing fieldwork for his PhD program at the Department of Media and Communication, Goldsmiths, University of London, with thesis topic: collaborative filmmaking with a wayang orang group from the foot of Mount Merapi, to reconsider the adaptation process from stage to screen, that happened in many places at the early cinema era.

 

Tito Imanda adalah seorang antropolog dan pembuat film. Tesis masternya di Departemen Media, Culture and Communication, New York University (2007) membahas faktor ekonomi politik industri film Indonesia. Tahun 2008-2013 dia membangun dan mengelola sebuah sekolah film di sebuah universitas di Jakarta. Saat ini dia melewatkan sebagian besar waktunya di Jogja dan London, sibuk menyelesaikan program doktor di Departemen Media and Communication, Goldsmiths, University of London. Tesis doktornya berfokus pada kolaborasi pembuatan film dengan kelompok wayang orang di kaki gunung Merapi, sebagai bagian dari pemahaman adaptasi orang panggung ke layar yang terjadi pada era awal kemunculan film di berbagai tempat di dunia.
