JOKO ANWAR

Director

Joko Anwar, born January 3, 1976 in Medan, North Sumatera, has been enjoying commercial and critical success as writer and director. The first film that he wrote, Arisan! (2003) won numerous awards at home and abroad and was hailed as a groundbreaking movie in Indonesia. His directorial debut, Janji Joni (Joni’s Promise, 2005) was box office smash comedy and was highly praised by international critics. His next film, the genre-bending Kala (2007) was named one of the best films of the year by Sight and Sound magazine who cited him as one of the smartest filmmakers in Asia. His third feature, Pintu Terlarang (The Forbidden Door, 2009) won top prize at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and was also named one of the best films of 2009 by Sight and Sound magazine. Richard Corliss of TIME wrote that “As slick as it is sick, the movie could be Anwar’s calling card for international employment”. He also mentioned the film as an “example of what movies could be but rarely dare to try”. His next film, Modus Anomali (Ritual) (2012) broke out into international market and also won praises from critics. His A Copy of My Mind (2015) competed at Venice International Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival in 2015. His first horror feature, Pengabdi Setan (Satan’s Slaves) broke record as the highest grossing Indonesian horror film of all time and was the highest grossing Indonesian film in 2017 and was sold to more than 42 countries and won the most awards in Indonesian equivalent of The Oscars. Joko Anwar has also directed TV series for HBO Asia, including Folklore: A Mother’s Love (2018). Joko Anwar also writes for other directors. He just finished directing an Indonesian superhero movie titled Gundala which slated to be released in July 2019.


Joko Anwar, lahir 3 Januari 1976 di Medan, Sumatera Utara, adalah seorang penulis skenario dan sutradara box office yang sekaligus berhasil mendapatkan pengakuan dari kritikus film dunia. Skenario pertamanya, Arisan! (2003), mendapatkan banyak penghargaan dalam dan luar negeri dan disebut-sebut sebagai film Indonesia yang melakukan gebrakan baru.  Film pertama yang dia sutradarai, Janji Joni (2005), ditayangkan di 50 festival film internasional di 5 benua dan berhasil secara komersial di Indonesia. Filmnya yang kedua, Kala, masuk dalam daftar film-film terbaik dunia tahun 2007 versi majalah Sight and Sound, Inggris, dan memenangkan banyak penghargaan termasuk di New York dan Berlin.  Pintu Terlarang, filmnya yang ketiga, memenangkan Film Terbaik di festival bergengsi Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival tahun 2009 dan mendapat pujian dari para kritikus dunia termasuk dari majalah TIME.  Filmnya yang keempat, Modus Anomali (2012), mendapatkan world premiere di South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) dan berhasil menembus pasar dunia termasuk di Amerika Serikat, Kanada, Inggris. Di Belanda dan Perancis, film ini diedarkan oleh Paramount Pictures.  A Copy of My Mind (2015), filmnya yang kelima, berkompetisi di Venice Film Festival dan menghasilkan penghargaan Sutradara Terbaik di Festival Film Indonesia.  Filmnya yang keenam, Pengabdi Setan, adalah film terlaris Indonesia tahun 2017 dan film Indonesia horor terlaris sepanjang masa, serta berhasil menembus pasar 42 negara dan menjadi film box office di beberapa di antaranya. Selain itu, Pengabdi Setan juga menjadi film Indonesia dengan nominasi Piala Citra Terbanyak dan berhasil memenangkan 7 Piala Citra. Pengabdi Setan juga berhasil menembus banyak festival internasional bergengsi termasuk di Rotterdam Film Festival.  Joko Anwar juga telah membuat film seri untuk HBO berjudul Halfworlds (2015) serta Folklore: A Mother’s Love (2018) yang berhasil masuk seleksi Toronto International Film Festival. Joko baru saja menyelesaikan film superhero indonesia berjudul Gudala yang akan rilis Juli 2019.

BENJAMIN ILLOS

Programmer

Benjamin Illos joined the programming team of the Directors’ Fortnight in 2012. This parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival celebrated its 50th edition last year. It aims to be eclectic and receptive to all forms and genres. Benjamin also is a programming adviser for the Fribourg International Film Festival. He collaborated with Pierre Rissient for a decade promoting films and directors, and took part in various productions as an editor, script researchist and subtitler.

Benjamin Illos bergabung dalam tim program Directors’ Fortnight di 2012. Segmen paralel ini merayakan 50 tahun Cannes Film Festival tahun lalu. Tujuannya adalah untuk menjadi elektif dan reseptif terhadap segala macam bentuk maupun genre. Benjamin juga merupakan seorang pensihat program di Fribourg International Film Festival. Ia berkolaborasi dengan Pierre Rissient selama satu dekade untuk mempromosikan berbagai film berserta sutradaranya, dan juga turut ambil bagian dalam berbagai kegiatan produksi sebagai penyunting, peneliti skrip dan pembuat subtitel.

Paolo Bertolin is a festival programmer, film critic and journalist. A consultant of Venice IFF, he has published articles in several Italian and international publications, such as “Cineforum”, “Segnocinema”, “Il Manifesto”, “The Korea Times”, “Cahiers du Cinéma” and “Senses of Cinema”.
