GERTJAN ZUILHOF

Programmer

Gertjan Zuilhof was born in 1955, the year when the last Dutch ship sailed back from Indonesia to Holland. He has been working as a program director for all of his life. It started when he, as a first-year student, was asked to volunteer at the local art house cinema. He had been a program director at the Rotterdam film festival for a long time but at the moment he’s been contributing as a free director at various festivals in Beijing, Taipei, Georgetown and Yogyakarta. His travels have brought him all over Asia and to Africa. Zuilhof also draws but he prefers the word ‘drawer’ rather than ‘artist’. The first time Gertjan Zuilhof visited Jogja was when Joseph Anggi Noen was running a program and Garin Nugroho asked him to talk to his students in his house at 7AM with them still in pajamas. It was probably the third Jogja Festival in 2008. In recent years, Zuilhof visits Jogja more frequently with the highlight in 2016 when they did not stop him to draw graffitis at Taman Budaya Societet Militair building. This year, he will be contributing in JAFF as a speaker for Public Lecture Indigenous Film.
