Critical Noises Film Appreciation in the Digital Age

With social media influencing the public sphere more and more, film appreciation is no longer confined to critics. Once the domain of selected experts, film appreciation now is also practiced by movie buffs and regular viewers. Online social platforms such as Rotten Tomatoes encourage viewers to voice their opinions, featuring them right alongside professional critics. Some argue, more exposure for viewers reviews can be a good thing – they can be more relatable considering that they were written by target audience members who may share the same tastes as their readers. But is it really that simple?

What do the cinema world and us audience exactly gain, and lose, among the rising noises of the social media?
