Schedule

XXI 5 | SUN 27 NOV | 14:30

Synopsis

Mahendraparvata’s theme is Java’s connection with Cambodia in the 8th – 9th centuries AD which is told through the metaphor of a sacred mask’s magical journey drifting in a Java river and then arriving at a river in the Phnom Kullen area, Cambodia where the Mahendraparvata site is located and then returning to the river in Java (Borobudur area).

According to archaeological studies, information about the connection between Java and Cambodia in ancient times is found in the translation of the Sdok Kak Thom inscription found at the border of Thailand and Cambodia. This inscription explains that in the 8-9 century AD, there was a connection between Jayavarman II, the ruler of Cambodia and Java. There is still a polemic among Javanese archaeologists which is called Java in Indonesia or Campa (Vietnam). This dance film is not meant to be a documentary about this topic but instead to emphasise the universal connection between dance and the temple.

BWCF (Borobudur Writers and Cultural Festival)

BWCF (Borobudur Writers and Cultural Festival)

Borobudur Writers Cultural Festival (BWCF) has been an annual festival which has been held since 2012.

The main concern of BWCF is to reinterpret the Indonesian archipelago's various literary treasures to pinpoint their relevance for the present and future of the country. BWCF considers that many essential things in the archipelago's history and culture of the archipelago have not been explored and discussed.

BWCF believes that modernity in Indonesia is unique because it is shaped by diverse plurality. Plurality is a treasure, like a water source that must be vigorously guarded. Religious and philosophical ideas in various ancient archipelago manuscripts, temple reliefs, and aesthetic ideas in arts and ceremonies which are spread throughout Aceh, Bali to Papua are inexhaustible sources of inspiration for contemporary Indonesia.

BWCF also believes that many things can be explored and discussed from the perspective of anthropology, axiology, and archipelago cosmology. Issues related to the power of tolerance, life's wisdom, and aesthetics. There are still many things that have been hidden or put to sleep for too long from the archipelago's culture whose energy we can uncover to reflect the modernity and the avant-garde movement of Indonesia.
