Synopsis
Sinopsis
Filmed in an abandoned fishermen village of Northern Qatar, ‘And Then They Burn the Sea’ is an ode to the filmmaker’s living mother whose memories abruptly left her during the making of the film. Al-Remaihi ruminates on an experience of familial loss of that which cannot be defined but is deeply felt by pairing existing family archives with reenacted dreams. Weaving a myriad of poetry, folk history, and personal archives, the film mirrors a history of maternal mourning rituals that lament their loved ones who may never be returned by the sea.

Majid Al Rumaihi
Majid Al-Remaihi is an award-winning filmmaker from Doha, Qatar. His short film “And Then They Burn the Sea” was Qatar’s first film at Locarno Film Festival (2021), and went on to win Best Short at Vienna Shorts; the Silver Tanit at Carthage Film Festival, and screened globally with more than 40 selections and garnering multiple awards at such festivals as Palm Springs ShortFest, Dublin, FrontDoc Italy, Malmo and more. Al-Remaihi's work focuses on unraveling the complexity of historical narratives and their reconstructions in the Arabian Gulf. His work has been exhibited at the National Museum of Qatar, Luma Westbau, amongst others.
