At a time heading for the future, a group of youth starts a speech course, hoping that their neighbors are afraid to live alone.

Synopsis

At a time nearly reaching the future, in a small town called Ospo, there is not any clue on how to operate many kinds of machine hardly requiring human force, but the people are reluctant to ask for a help from the others. Their interactions are limited at the level of small talk―like asking for one’s well being; after getting a reply, the conversation is over―and peeking at their neighbors’ activity. However, there are five teenagers who have the idea to make the people needing one another. It is not based on any social mission, instead it is a way to goin profit. They do it in two ways; the first group starts a speech course, while the second group provides a service to make people appear more convincing while speaking. The efforts given almost failed since the course participants prefer to have sex with the others because it has been a very long time since the last time they saw people freshened up and looked sensual. These five persons have not given up hopes. With limited skill in IT, they start an app similar to Grindr, an app which tracks people in need of help to operate a machine. Besides tracking, this app facilitates the people who are struggling with their machines with some encouraging speech. The encouragement is certainly delivered by trained speakers to motivate the others in need. This method failed. It is considered to be too noisy and people start to think that they are weak and less motivated. Three out of five decided to part ways. There are only two people left in the group who are still trying to make profits using other ways possible.

In Ospo, there is an empty house that was once occupied by someone. The person disappears, nobody knows why. These two opportunists take advantage of the situation. They make up a story narrating that the state has found a lot of missing people and will soon repatriate them. The news earns everyone’s attention and makes them start to wonder about this particular neighbor’s whereabouts. The said opportunists make up another story, telling it in a way that the story is the most truthful one. One of them transforms into a human-genderuwo (man-ghost) who longs for his home. Everyday he walks around the markets, parks, and supermarkets to tell about his mysterious life. Meanwhile, the other showing himself as the one who cares the most, accompanies the genderuwo on his walks. They work on their story like children’s toys, in which they will start telling stories once people give them some money. People are getting bored with the same story told everyday. Gradually, the human-genderuwo disappears along with his human friend without anyone knowing the reason.

 

Director’s Statement

When I started my teenage year in early 2000s, my parents were extremely concerned with my social life. They told me to join arts, martial arts, youth organizations, or any group possible as long as it would broaden my social circle, so that when I had some problems, I could share it with my friends. I also remember in my Sociology class, it is said that humans are social being by nature; humans need each other in order to survive. Being an introvert, whether it is intentional or unintentional, is doomed to have a foul image. Mass media, such as TV shows, often give shoddy portrayals of those who prefer a world of their own. The given narrative relates these people into a world of crime, for instance maniac killers and people with multiple personalities in negative contexts.

It triggers me to think that humans are designed to belong within a group, not to be defined by their nature as social beings. There are some particular examples that I have in mind to represent that a social group can turn itself into terror for humans; one will not be forcefully asked for money at the bus station by some preman (local gangster) if they have close relations to one another; or if someone is having a physical characteristic different from the others, one will be seen or considered as a bizarre entity, thus the society will alienate the person. The bigger anxiety someone has, the bigger chance it is to control an individual within a specific group.

Therefore, Adonan Membuat Manja serves as a sort of an instruction on how to form, direct, and mobilize a group in order to obtain some profit and manage terror.

Born in Solo, Tunggul currently lives with his wife and child in Gunung Kidul. He works as a lecturer in Film & Televison Department at Udinus, Semarang. Basically, Tunggul is a filmmaker but he spends most of his time watching films rather than making one. He realizes that it is not easy to make a living as a filmmaker, unless Bollywood wants him to. He will not decline the offer because it increases his chance to buy the limited edition Ferrari.
